I couldn't say. The shapeshifters in Fodlan could have people fooled for decades.

What she described reminded me of how they would behave. They'd impersonate nobility and infiltrate country leaderships, destabilizing their rule from within.

But it's too early to tell! I could be projecting.

Projecting or not, it's certainly an angle to consider.

Is there anything in your world that can be done to reveal them? Not that it would work here, necessarily, but just as a way to categorize possibilities.

Honestly, not much. They used a type of magic that was practically unheard of. They would only reveal themselves when their machinations were discovered.

I think all you can do is take a close look at the people around you and take note when they start to behave erratically without apparent cause.

Though I suspect... You could also steal their blood and have a look?

Are you certain this magic doesn't allow for mimicry on a cellular level?

It would be more difficult here as well, given the impact our Shadows have on us, to identify erratic behaviour with the same level of certainty as in our own worlds, I think.

But if you come across anyone you're uncertain about, we can work on getting their DNA and I can try to figure it out that way. We don't even need blood for that, necessarily. Saliva would work as well.

I think it would be very foolish to assume it's impossible. As for likely versus unlikely, we have a bit more leeway in that case.

But the more safeties we have in place, the better. A DNA test should probably just be one thing we have in our arsenal — so to speak — than the sole thing on which we rely.

Of course, we're speaking entirely in theoreticals at this point.

Back home, that's well within my capabilities. Here, it's a little more uncertain... I'd need to see the injury myself, and it would probably take multiple sessions. Depending on the severity of the injury and the extent, it may require debridement.

The brands are resistant to my sort of healing — and your suspicion is correct, salves and balms don't work in and of themselves.

However — and I can't take credit for this discovery, myself — the skin of the badiliscus is able to reduce the scarring to the point of invisibility.

A friend of mine makes a point of keeping me stocked up, if you wanted to swing by the clinic I'll see some are set aside for you, as well as something for the pain. Can you give me a rough number of how many people you're looking to treat?
